Disability Mentoring Day

Disability Mentoring Day promotes career development for students and job-seekers with disabilities through job shadowing and hands-on career exploration. With leadership, coordination and resource materials from AAPD, local communities around the country organize their own activities to bring students and employers together for informational sessions about career opportunities and one-on-one mentoring with volunteers at public and private places of employment. If you would like to participate in Disability Mentoring Day 2008 in your region of the country, as either a mentee or employer mentor, please visit the AAPD website and see the DMD fact sheet and Local Coordinators information. In March 2006, Proyecto Visión did a complete writeup of Disability Mentoring Day. Read it in our archives. Date: October 15, 2009

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, as well during the year-long celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, let us use “dignity and justice for all of us” as a rallying call, as these principles are far from being realized for everyone. Dignity and justice are embodied in the civil, cultural, economic, political, and social rights promoted by the Convention. Therefore, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a time to make a renewed commitment to the ratification and full implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol.

The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 3 December, aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. The theme of the Day is based on the goal of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities, established by the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by General Assembly in 1982. Date: December 3, 2009

California Disability Capitol Action Day
On one day a year, people with disabilities descend on the Capitol Building in Sacramento. We do this to remind legislators that people with disabilities are voters, consumers, members of the workforce, parents, and tax payers...and our voices *will* be heard. Date: May 27, 2009
